2016 was good to me 😊 as I was lucky to work personally with over 100 brides throughout the year.  Through conversations and trials, we explored thousands of elegantly different looks, and ended up with a wide range of beautiful wedding hairstyles for people’s wedding day.  As I look back on the year, one big theme seemed to transcend the rest….Big Hair.

Big hair has been big in the past, remember the 80s?

80s wedding hair

2016 Brides also went big, bold and beautiful, but with their own modern, elegant wedding hairstyles.  Here are a few of the looks that were particularly popular last year….

The Elaborate Structured Updo

Much like Marie Antoinette in the 18th Century, the elaborate structured updo was a big hit in 2016.  #Throwback!  Want to feel like a princess on your wedding day?  Put your hair up with some serious structure…possibly a Tiara 👑 (?) and get married in a stately mansion with extravagant decor and a billowing wedding dress.  And if you’re looking for a stately mansion yourself, have a look at the Metropolitan Room or any of the Top 5 Places I recommend for getting married in New York.  Here are a couple of fabulous looks from 2016 Miss Harlequin Brides to give you a sense of some modern updos.

The Hollywood Glam Downdo

Hollywood inspires people in all areas of their life.  Whether it’s Baby from Dirty Dancing coming of age, or any of these Hollywood beauties getting married on film , there is a magic from movies that inspires every one of us.  The Hollywood Glam Downdo is all about the Sophisticated, Modern, Oscar-inspired finger waves which sometimes make you feel like you’re walking the red carpet rather than the down the aisle to your wedding.  It’s not at all traditional, but not everyone wants traditional! Check out these spectacular looking brides on their wedding days!

The Simple Low Bun – with a twist

The simple low bun has always been a hit for an elegant, beautiful look, but this year there was a twist…tonnes of volume in the crown.  Originally made popular by Bridget Bardot in the 50s and 60s, New York City brides took this elegant, romantic, soft and timeless style and made it their own.   The 2016 version had a new character with a flaring crown to create even more volume.  These 2016 Miss Harlequin Brides channeled their modern version of 1950s Bridget Bardot and looked fabulous on their wedding day.

After thinking through it all, you’ve decided that elopement is not for you.  You’re going to GO FOR IT!  An all singing-all-dancing, fully fledged, fabulous wedding in the biggest, bestest, most beautiful city in the world. This is YOUR wedding. Your ONLY wedding…ever.  You want it to be special, DiFFeRent, unique…not some cookie cutter experience.

When it comes to having an amazing wedding, atmosphere is EVERYTHING (except for your partner, of course, who matters…but only when they are behaving), and the wedding venue sets the scene.  Having worked with over 1,000 unique brides, I’ve seen them all.  Where you ultimately decide to get married is up to you, but if you want some ideas, here are a few places I’d recommend.

Liberty Warehouse (Redhook)

Liberty Warehouse

Don’t let the Brooklyn location or the antiquated website fool you.  The Liberty Warehouse is an absolute Gem.  With amazing views of Manhattan and it’s namesake, the Statue of Liberty, everything about a wedding at the Liberty feels special.  A one-of-a-kind venue, the Liberty has incredible lighting along with a huge bridal suite to make your day look and feel absolutely fabulous.  Bonus: having withstood Hurricane Sandy, getting married at the Liberty Warehouse means you’ll be entering your marriage with strength and stamina…a gift any couple would be blessed to receive!

Metropolitan Building (Long Island City)

Metropolitan Building

This antique house in Long Island City is just a stones throw from Manhattan and provides one of the most distinct atmospheres for any New York City wedding.  Every spot in the building is a perfect photo opportunity and captures your day in a unique and special way.  You can choose your own furniture for the event and create different experiences on different floors.  Throw in the fact that it has a fantastic bridal suite and the Metropolitan is a home run choice.

The Green Building (Brooklyn)The Green Building

The Green Building is a hipster’s wedding fantasy.  Literally in a “Green Building” in the heart of Brooklyn, the Green Building is a converted barn with a rustic feel, huge open spaces and wedding-fabulous outdoor terrace.  Whether it’s the perfect photo of you and your partner set against the exposed brick backdrop or the picture of your friend cuddling the fire extinguisher at the end of the night, the images from your wedding will tell an incredible story of a memorable night.  Did I mention it has a bridal suite!?  #Perfect

Central Park (Manhattan)

Central Park Wedding

Central Park is the quintessential New York & American wedding spot.  With over 15 dedicated spots in addition to the Conservatory Garden, you can find the perfect spot for the exact experience you want. For just $25, you can hardly beat the price and with hotels nearby, it’s incredibly convenient.  Sorry, no bridal suite here!

City Hall (Manhattan)

New York City Hall

Ok, so you’re not going to elope, but you do want to keep things simple.  After all, the whole process of “getting organized” drives you crazy.  Maybe you’re looking for a bit of “random”.  Well, getting married at City Hall is a hoot!  Not only is it a spectacular building, but you’ll get to experience all the chaos that Manhattan has to offer.  It’s not for everyone, but it might be for you…and you can’t beat the price ($25)!

So now that you’ve figured out where you’re getting married….do you know where you’re getting ready?

You’ve picked your date.  You have the perfect venue.  The catering is all sorted.  You have an amazing dress.  Your bridal party is confirmed.  Invitations are out.  Even your honeymoon is all set.  You know that your wedding day is going to be incredible.

Then you start to picture it…You and 6 of your best friends – plus your mom and your partner’s mom – cramped in a hotel room, trying to put yourselves together for the biggest day of your life.  Hmmmmmmmmmmm…this doesn’t feel right.  Ok, you get TWO hotel rooms so everyone can have space…that doesn’t feel right either!  Arghh!!!!!
